OUR STORY

Built on 44 years of Indigenous media history.

IndiJ Public Media was formed to give Indigenous media a permanent nonprofit home — grounded in the legacy of ICT and built for the future of our communities.

1981

The Lakota Times

Tim Giago of the Oglala Lakota Nation launches the first national Indigenous newspaper in South Dakota.

2018

Rebirth

Revived as a digital nonprofit under editorial leadership of Mark Trahant, Shoshone-Bannock.

1992

National Expansion

The paper becomes Indian Country Today, reflecting its growing national scope and audience.

2020

IndiJ Public Media Founded

IndiJ is incorporated in Arizona as a 501(c)(3) — a permanent nonprofit home for Indigenous media.

1998

A New Home

Indian Country Today is sold to the Oneida Indian Nation and continues as a news magazine and website.

2021

ICT Joins IndiJ

NCAI transfers control of ICT to IndiJ. ICT expands into public television broadcast.

2017

End of an Era

After 35 years, Indian Country Today is donated to NCAI and temporarily goes dark.
